Out of the Black by Matt Campbell

Out of the Black by Matt Campbell

So sad! Yet our natural inclination is toward that which is shiny and new despite the damage to natural resources and the resulting pollution. Matt Campbell illustrates this by coating well-loved stuffies in black rubber, freezing them in time and space. As he puts it, they are " wrenched out of the blue (the natural living world) and thrown into the black (the artificial or "dead" world that we create)." This work is symbolic of our relationship with nature: we claim to love it, but we sure do mess around with it as well.

Droog hotel

Around the corner from flagship store Droog at Home in Amsterdam will soon be Home at Droog, a 10-room member-only hotel, concept restaurant and exhibition space designed by Tokyo-based Atelier Bow-Wow.
Leaving the canal-facing front façade intact, Atelier Bow-Wow created an intricate inner courtyard façade inspired by Amsterdam's historic architecture. The hotel restaurant will host new concept dinners by invited designers and chefs, improvising with local market left-overs and practicing the act of eating slowly yet attentively. The street level will house an on-going program of Droog exhibitions and events.

TOYS'R'US - Dinghy scale 1:1, 2006

"A boat and related equipment are joined together in a welded metal frame. Everything is painted in a unifying plastic layer to resemble the surface of a model kit. The real boat is transformed into a model of itself, and its original purpose has given way to something else.

TOYS'R'US was made for the exhibition Besökarna (the Visitors) in a new part of Malmö, the Western Harbour, built for the housing fair Bo01 in 2001. The area was developed as a demonstration project to provide a model for future cities. Today, six years later, it still feels like a model. The artificial atmosphere still awaits to break loose from its surrounding plastic sticks."

Black and White - Alec Strang

" Alec Strang's work draws on contemporary society and the darker, more fantastical depths of his imagination. His use of fineliners to produce his predominantly black and white images give his characters a feeling of charm and immediacy. He is predominantly an illustrator and designer but keep an eye out for more animated work in the near future."
