Damaged Goods by Barnaby Barford

It is the classic tale of boy meets girl, two star-crossed lovers whose peaceful courtship is prevented by an older gentleman with a pair of ferocious porcelain poodles. But the friendly circus folk try to lend a hand and the tragedy eventually has a happy ending. Barnaby Barford's brilliant animated film has a cast of ceramic characters who come back to star in sculptural works that are three-dimensional scenes from the film -- a must-see.

Lace in Translation

Lace is the inspiration for an exhibition at The Design Center at Philadelphia University featuring the work of Tord Boontje, Demakersvan and Cal Lane. Lace in Translation features intricate installations that are contemporary updates on an ancient craft. Demakersvan creates a lacy chain link fence, shown above; Lane welds an oil tank into a display of filigree and urns a lacy scroll into a lawn; Boontje makes a sofa out of a spider web. We are reminded that lace doesn't have to be related to textiles anymore.

If Cherries Were Raindrops by Dustin Yellin

Dustin Yellin's new sculptures of vivisectionary resin, ink, glass and acrylic will be part of Eden Disorder, an exhibition opening next week. Here's what to expect: "The crux of Yellin's sculpture is pure contradiction: the objects don't exist. Despite what the eye thinks it sees, it's simply not there. No tree, no skull, no branch, no bone. Focus on the front plane and there is no denying the intricate depths of twisting color--although what you see may indeed look like no living thing you've seen before. Walk around to the side and it becomes clear that what you see is not what you thought--the images disappear. Yellin's convoluted brain-children are layered ink and acrylic drawings, frozen in layers of resin or glass, flattened out and brought to full size."
